Add the new language, but don't publish it yet

Shopify only exports texts for a language your store already has, so add it first. Shoppers won't see it until step 4.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings › Languages.
  2. Click Add language.
  3. Pick the language you ordered, for example French or German, and click Next.
  4. Turn on the domain where the language should appear, then click Done.
Leave it unpublished for now. You'll switch it on once the translations are in.

Export your texts and send them to us

  1. Still in Settings › Languages, click Export.
  2. Select the new language you just added.
  3. Choose All content and click Export.
  4. Shopify emails you the file; it doesn't download. Forward that email to danny@storespeak.eu.
The file holds your product titles and descriptions, collections, pages, blog posts and SEO texts. No customer data, passwords or payment details.

We translate and check everything

We rewrite every text so it reads like a local shop wrote it, keep all formatting and links intact, and send you back the same file, ready to import.

You · 3 minutes

Import the translated file

  1. Go to Settings › Languages and click Import.
  2. Click Add file and select the file we sent.
  3. Tick Overwrite any existing translations if your store already had translations you want replaced. Otherwise leave it unticked.
  4. Click Upload and continue, then Import.
Don't open and re-save the file in Excel first; that can break its formatting. Shopify emails you a confirmation; if it lists anything as failed or skipped, forward it to us and we'll fix it.

Check and publish the language

  1. Preview a few product pages in the new language.
  2. Go to Settings › Languages, click the … menu next to the language, and click Publish.

The language now gets its own web addresses, and checkout and order emails appear in it too. Using Shopify Markets? Check that the language is switched on for the market you're targeting, for example France.

Wix

Wix has a built-in export and import for translations through Wix Multilingual.

Add Wix Multilingual and the new language

  1. Add Wix Multilingual to your site if you haven't yet.
  2. Add the language you ordered as a secondary language, for example French or German.
Don't make the new language visible to visitors yet. That comes in step 4.
You · 2 minutes

Export your texts and send them to us

  1. Open the Multilingual section in your site dashboard.
  2. Click the ⋯ (More Actions) icon next to the new language.
  3. Click Export Content, then Export Content again. A CSV file downloads to your computer.
  4. Email that file to danny@storespeak.eu.

We translate and check everything

We fill in the translation column and send the same file back. Some formatted texts can't travel safely in the file; if your site has those, we send them separately so you can paste them into Wix's Translation Manager.

You · 3 minutes

Import the translated file

  1. Open the Multilingual section and click ⋯ (More Actions) next to the language.
  2. Click Import translations, then Start Now.
  3. Click Upload CSV File, select the file we sent, and click Import Translations.
  4. Click Review Translations, check that pages show as Translated, and click Save.
Don't edit the file yourself, especially the ID column, or the import may fail.

Make the language visible and publish

Switch the new language on for visitors in Wix Multilingual, then publish your site so the translations go live.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce has no translation system of its own; it depends on your translation plugin. Find yours below.

Polylang Pro

  1. Go to Products (or Pages) and select the items to translate.
  2. Under Bulk actions, choose Translate and click Apply.
  3. Select the target language, choose Export selected content into a file, pick XLIFF 2.0, and click Submit.
  4. Email the downloaded file to danny@storespeak.eu.
  5. When we send it back: Languages › Translations › Import translations, choose the file and click Upload.

Requires Polylang Pro; the free version has no export. The file can only be imported into the site that created it. Source: Polylang documentation.

WPML

WPML exports translation jobs as XLIFF files. In short: make yourself a translator under WPML › Translation Management, send the products and pages to translation, and download the jobs as XLIFF files. We translate them and you upload them back in the same place.

The screens differ between WPML versions, so email us first and we'll walk you through your exact setup.

Another plugin, or none yet?

Using TranslatePress, the free version of Polylang, or no translation plugin at all? Email us and we'll suggest the simplest setup for your store before we start.

Squarespace & other platforms

Squarespace

Squarespace has no built-in translation feature. Stores usually add a translation tool such as Weglot, or build translated copies of their key pages.

Either way works with us: we deliver your translations page by page, ready to paste in or to load into your translation tool. Email us with your store link and we'll agree the easiest route.

BigCommerce, Magento, Webflow and others

Most platforms or their translation apps can export texts to a file. Email us which platform you use and we'll send you the exact steps.

Good to know

New products later?

Export just the new or untranslated texts and send them over. On the monthly plan that's included.

Is my data safe?

The export contains your shop texts only: no customer data, passwords or payment details. We never log in to your store.

Legal pages

Returns policy and terms aren't included, as they need a legal check in each country.

Buttons like "Add to cart"

These come from your theme or platform and are usually translated already. If one isn't, let us know.

Stuck on a step?

Email us a screenshot and we'll help you through it.
